Machines have sources of power and a system which enables the transmission of power. The entire system of power transmission has a complete assembly of electrical or mechanical parts which involves the use of speed change gears and a propulsion shaft. This shaft pushes power from the engine to a axle. More simply put, a transmission system may involve only a gearbox which is composed of gear train and gears. This system of gears will transfer power from a rotating source to another chosen system.
The development of electric power
Electric power transmission is the most powerful kind of transmission around today. Electric grids form the basis of power transmission and alternating current is the preferred source of this power. In the modern world grid technology has replaced mechanical transmission sources in most cases. A.C current can be easily scaled up by a transformer so that minimum amount of resistive loss occurs.
Conductors are used for handling transmission over large distances. A different set of transformers is used to scale down voltage levels. Overhead lines are associated with electrical power transmission and they are known as the most economic ways of transferring huge quantities of power from one place to another. Transmission of power is performed underground too by high voltage lines and this is often found in busy urban places.
Wireless power transmission is another form of electrical transmission. Wave guides can carry electromagnetic fields and radio waves by electromagnetic wave change.
